Probably kinda weird question [06 Oct 2007|08:46am]

[ mood | curious ]

Hi, I'm new here, and I admit I've been fascinated -- and horrified -- by the case since it first began. I've read all of the books except "Paul's Case", and that's sort of what my post is about.

My sister-in-law is doing her Masters degree in sociology right now, and she wants to know how she might go about wiritng a letter to Bernanrdo, on the off chance she gets a response. It's part of her research. She's communicated with a few inmates in the US already but this case in particular would add to her thesis. She regrets missing the chance to possibly write to Karla actually. The reason she asked me about it is because I followed the case so closely for so many years, but even an internet search hasn't turned up anything.

Does anyone know if you can just send a letter to the Kingston Pen, addressed to him without knowing his prisoner number? Or is his number in "Paul's Case"? Neither one of us has any idea how the author managed to correspond with him in the first place! If anyone has any advice, we'd be grateful. And no, she does NOT want to write love letters to him, just in case anyone was wondering! Eugh. It's all research. Thank you!

perplexed [29 Jul 2006|03:39am]

according to Stephen William's book Karla (in chapter 3, "Dr Arndt"), after meeting Dr. Arndt, who had been her psychiatrist for a time, he (Arndt) gave Williams, to quote from the book, "all of Karla's school, medical and psychological records, including her recent hospital charts and with the nurses daily observations and remarks; everything to do with her eight week stay at the Northwestern General in March and April 1993, including very detailed records and charts documenting her perscpriptions and drug consuption . . . the scraps of paper on which Dr. Arndt had scribbled notes during Karla's therapy sessions, as well as Karla's handwritten private diaries of abuse . . . the letter she wrote to her parnets apologizing for having killed her sister."

this perplexes me because i thought that it was illegal for doctors to share their patients records. in fact, a few paragraphs down, Willams writes "psychiatrists never share patient files." it is illegal, isn't it? would Karla be able to sue Williams for doing this?

The Karla Homolka/Paul Bernardo Links Archive [13 Jul 2006|05:46pm]

i went through all the back entries of this community to find these links. later on i'll go through these links and weed out the dead links and repeats, and eventually i'll put them into some kind of order. my hope is to have one huge post with links about the case that people can use as an archive. if you know of a link that's not included, please comment with it and i'll add it to the list.

Karla: A Pact With the Devil (books) [11 Jul 2006|11:04pm]

at the used bookstore today i bought a copy of "Karla: Pact with the Devil" by Stephen Williams. it's different than the one i already own -

this is the copy i have that i bought new when it came out in 2004:

and this is the copy that i bought today, used, which was published in 2003:

so i'm thinking it's the first edition, even though on the inside it says it was first published in French in 2002. the copy i just bought has 16 pages of colour pictures. the copy i boughttwo years ago has no pictures. also, the text in this copy is easier to read - i'm sure that of you who have the copy of Karla in the first picture must have found the text hard to read, i know i sure did.

think i read somewhere that it has more information than the copy i already have. i can't compare them and see if this is true because i'm not sure where my other copy is - i'll have to look for that tomorrow.

another reason i have to believe that my new copy has more information is, i used to own the paperback Invisible Darkness (by the same author, about the same case), and then a friend gave me her hardcover copy, and the hardcover copy had a whole bunch of information which they edited out of the paperback - maybe because of the publication ban?

wikipedia.org has this to say:

In January 2005, author Stephen Williams was sentenced for violating the publication ban by including forbidden details in his two books on Bernardo and Homolka, making him only the second person sentenced for violating the publication ban—the first being one of the "Electronic ban breakers." Stephen Williams reached a plea agreement with the Canadian authorities in which he agreed that he would no longer use "any materials belonging to the Crown" as part of his writings. It is, as of this writing, unclear whether or not Stephen Williams will remain active in this case, but he was present at the June 2005 810.2 hearing for Homolka, which would seem to indicate he will.

the pictures in the book are pretty good, although i don't know why Williams included the picture of Karla's lawyer wearing a pair of pink swimming trunks. also included is a picture of a very dead Tammy Lyn. wow. i have seen pictures of her dead before, but this picture - she is very, very dead, and it's more disturbing than any of the other death pictures i've seen of her.

my dear friend freakin_sweet just joined the community! let's have a big round of applause for our newest member. *cheers*

EDIT: wait. freakin_sweet, was it you who just joined today?

Homolka loses bid to change name

Convicted killer Karla Homolka has lost her latest legal battle to change her name to Emily Chiara Tremblay, a surname that is one of the most common in Quebec, where she is believed to be living.

According to TV network TVA, a judge turned down Homolka's request after the Crown argued that her lawyer took too long to appeal a rejection of her earlier bid for a name change.

Homolka originally asked for the name change, arguing it was about safeguarding her personal security. But a ruling by Quebec civil-status officials said the public was not significantly familiar with the name she now uses, Karla Leanne Teale.

She and her former husband and partner in crime, Paul Bernardo, chose the surname Teale from a movie about a serial killer.

Bernardo is serving a life sentence for the murders of Ontario teenagers Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French in the 1990s. Homolka got a lesser sentence for testifying against him.

Same freedoms as other Canadians

She chose to live in Quebec when she was released from a Montreal-area prison last July, after serving her entire 12-year manslaughter term.

Although her movements were initially restricted — no contact with those under the age of 16, no contact with criminals and regular reporting to police — she successfully appealed those conditions. Homolka now has the same freedoms as any other Canadian.

She is still believed to be living in Quebec but there have been no reports of public sightings for several months. The last publicly reported sighting of her was during the summer of 2005 when she was working at a hardware store in Longueuil.

According to Canadian Press, Homolka did not put her own name on the request to change her name, using instead her lawyer's so Homolka's did not show up on the public record.

Annie Huot, a spokeswoman for the Quebec solicitor general, said it was the first time she had seen such a tactic, CP reported.

"There is an article in the code of civil procedure which stipulates that one cannot plead under the name of others and that a person who undertakes a legal procedure must do it under their own name and give their identity and address," she said.

Homolka will be able to try again to legally change her name.
